Men are that they might have joy! (But whose definition of Joy?)

I have been thinking a lot about something a friend told me. He was justifying his choice to leave his religion to live a life that he knew was forbidden by his church because one of our great doctrines is that we are supposed to have joy in THIS life, not simply in eternity. As I read the scriptures, though, I was drawn to the doctrine of becoming. The Beattitudes of the New Testament and both sets of commandments given to Moses on Mt Sinai were designed to help humans become something. That becoming, I believe, is very often uncomfortable for us - just as the parable of the Refiner's Fire references. So my question became, whose definition of Joy are we supposed to obtain in this life? It is evident to me that through the doctrine of Christ, he meant us to obtain Joy in God, Joy in the satisfaction of freeing ourselves from guilt - not through self-justification, but through honest alignment of our lives with God's will. He meant that we are to find joy in our trials and tribulations through a personal comforter - the Holy Ghost. Heavenly Father doesn't say "Come unto me, unless it's going to make you miserable" or "Come unto me, unless it's easier to live the life you were born into." It is simply "Come unto me." I believe that we, as Christians, need to do so much better at not judging others as they try to Come unto Christ, but when we find these testimony-killing, very tempting twisting of doctrines, we need to beware and know them for what they are. Men ARE that they might have joy - in this life - and it comes through aligning our wills with those of God.
