Some Questions for the proponents of Common Core

1. Given that you believe that the higher standards are beneficial (and I agree) and that Utah must be FORCED to adopt them through either the Federal Government or a contract with this Consortium, why do you believe that the politicians in Washington State or any other State (since you so distrust Utah's) are in the best position to make those judgements?
2. What good are higher standards if the teachers are not trained any differently (especially those who have been in the field more than 5 years) and do not change their methods?
3. How is compliance with the standards assessed? If it is through high-stakes testing, how is Common Core any different than NCLB?

Some questions from others that I believe are valid:
"On April 26, 2012, the State Board will once again host a hearing on the adoption of the Common Core now called the Utah Core Standards. The standards were adopted by the State Board in August 2011 after dozens of meetings with the public and the board as well as months of development and consideration. The standards were developed by the states and each state had (and still has) the option to use them or not, as they wish. A timeline and some answers to common questions about the Common Core is also attached.”

When were those dozens of meetings were held from the time the standards were released till the board adopted them 2 days later?

1. Why does the USOE say that Utah is free and has local control, under Common Core, when the fiscal agent for Utah (Washington state) signed the document saying it "has agreed to be BOUND by every statement and assurance in the application and WILL SUPPORT its implementation" (pg. 12) and we agreed that when push comes to shove, Utah must submit to the will of Washington State as the lead state in the consortium as well as to the Common Core State Standards, which are not the same as Utah's standards, and are not amendable by Utah in any way?



2. Why does the USOE say that the federal department of education in no way directs or controls Common Core, when the Cooperative Agreement clearly states that Utah and the consortium of states must coordinate efforts, give status updates, written reports, telephone conferences and student data to the U.S. Dept. of Education?



3. Why did Utah sign up for Common Core before reading the standards themselves?



4. Why did Utah accept an experimental and controversial set of standards that had never been piloted?



5. Why didn't Utah do a cost analysis or a legal analysis of the consequences of Common Core on educational freedoms and budget, before Utah signed up?



6. Since Utah got no grant money for signing up for Common Core, and since states that didn't sign up for Common Core, like Virginia and Texas, still get their federal education dollars, why does anybody in Utah still want to stay bound to it?



7. Why hasn't the USOE made it clear to teachers that public domain means Utah could have taken on higher standards on our own if we'd chosen to, (even Common Core's standards, if we liked them) but we did not need to take on the political fetters that came along with it, and that we can still do that if we sever ties to Common Core? (We lose nothing-- no money, no standards, nothing-- and we gain our educational sovereignty back which is our Constitutional right.)



8. Why are school boards all over Utah under the impression that federal law mandates they must delete parental consent to comply with Common Core testing rules that put the federal gov. above parents when it comes to authority over personal student data? (This is not the federal goverment's jurisdiction, and our school boards don't seem to understand that.)



9. Why does the USOE maintain that the standards were state-led when in fact USOE officials didn’t even know who was on the writing committee of the standards before they were completed?

10. Why are school boards all over Utah changing privacy laws to align with Common Core implementation even though parental rights are getting deleted in the process (FERPA revisions) -in favor of the federal government's control over student data?

11. Since Superintendent Shumway revealed on Rod Arquette's radio show on 3/6/2012 that we are already getting federal pressure from the DoEd related to the common core standards, what are the specific items of pressure and why is this situation dismissed by the Utah DoEd as not a federal takeover of the system?

12. Is there a requirement within Common Core to have all children at grade level at the end of the year? If so, how does this differ from NCLB?

13. How did you determine that the Common Core math standards were better than our 2007, A- rated math standards?

I stand up for the U.S. on immigration, but I REFUSE to blame ONLY illegal immigrants for this mess. The government, business extortion, and a willingness to benefit from their slave labor has created this mess. This is how I propose we get out of it.

There are at least 5 major differences between myself and Luz Robles: 1. I believe in LESS Government to steal your hard-earned money. 2. I believe in SIGNIFICANTLY Less Entitlements and limited to NO Access to entitlements for children of illegal aliens or parents here on visas when they gave birth to their children. 3. I believe in strengthening our LEGAL immigration policies to bring the brightest and most talented people to the U.S. while helping illegals and those who do not honor our country to self-deport or deport at the cost of the businesses that brought them here. 4. I am a strong proponent of the use of E-Verify for EACH and EVERY SINGLE JOB in the U.S. 5. I am a proponent of sealing our borders to illegal immigration from any source.

I absolutely agree with the premise, but this guy's bigotry and prejudice scream from his choices for examples in this article. The truth is that quotas are not the answer, but SOMETHING must be done. Just because a person is blind does not mean he cannot teach, do computer networking, sing, conduct a choir, do customer service, babysit, or whatever he wants (besides drive). The truth is that the ADA and Federal Regulations have been used to create a backlash against hiring the disabled. The examples this man provided probably represent less than 1% of all disabled job applicants, but they are used as excuses not to hire the other 79% of qualified disabled applicants. Just because you can't imagine how someone would do a job just as effectively and efficiently as someone without their disability DOES NOT MEAN THEY CAN'T! It is disgusting when, IN UTAH, an uncertified, unqualified applicant can get a full time Elementary School Music position ahead of a Qualified, Licensed applicant just because of the imaginary "risks" that the interviewer contrives in their minds. Both sides of this are disgusting. The reality needs to be addressed, but more Government Quotas with more red tape is not the way to do it. If this guy spent 1/2 the effort bringing statistical evidence of how a disabled person CAN be as efficient and productive as a non-disabled applicant if THEY were PERMITTED to provide their own accomodations instead of being tied up with red tape by the government, He MIGHT be able to change the situation instead of adding to the problem with his evident bigotry. Here's my proposal Allow applicants with disabilities to provide their own technology and interface it with whatever database/ system the job uses. Allow that applicant to demonstrate his or her proficiency prior to hiring. Eliminate discriminatory practices discovered after hiring without forcing the disabled employee to go through legal channels. Design proprietary computer systems with accessibility in mind from the start. If you work WITH the disabled INSTEAD of AGAINST THEM, you will find they are loyal, capable, independent workers. YOU WILL ALSO GET HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of People OFF of the GOVERNMENT ENTITLEMENTS who WANT to work and CAN Work!
